Somebody's got a case of the Mondays!
I felt like I was PMSing today, but I don't know why. I was vaguely moody & irritable all day (I'm not anymore, thankfully). Kept having to remind myself not to be snippy with my coworkers everytime they'd interrupt me with a question about something. Probably just a Monday thing though (hence the Office Space subject heading). I have a hard time sleeping well on Sunday nights, because I always let my sleep schedule get all wonky over the weekend despite my plans to the contrary, and then spend Monday all tired. I should really quit doing that.
That reminds me, I should watch Office Space again sometime. I love that movie so much that I can't believe I don't own it. Give me back my stapler! Haha. Best work movie ever.
Changing the subject, I'll have you guys know that I'm finally going to jump on the Mad Men bandwagon. I set my DVR for it and everything. Now I can finally know what people on my flist keep raving about. As if I need another new show to get obsessed with! Heh.
In other happy news, the ants are finally gone from my apartment (THANK GOD!), and guess who started walking yesterday on her very first birthday? That would be my niece! Way to decide to make that developmental leap on a memorable day, kid! I spent the afternoon with her on Saturday (and spent time with Jayden as well), so I plan to post an entry about that this week as well. It's actually mostly already written, but this entry would just be way too long if I included it here so I'll probably put it up tomorrow night. In the meantime, I've got some more Battlestar Galactica rambling to force upon you all (this time about the episode "A Disquiet Follows My Soul," i.e. the episode where my 'ship finally lands, a.k.a. bow chica bow wow, haha). This time I'm even including a little picspammy goodness, because I hear that's what all the cool kids are doing these days and because I am a total follower. Hee. And also because I cannot talk about this episode without including pics, I just can't.
Lastly, I'll also include a Vid of the Day, this time for the X-Files. I am loving this whole Vid of the Day thing. Finally I have use for my hundreds of favorited YouTube videos! Heh.
After this episode, I only have like six or so episodes left to cover before I finally hit the finale (which I still haven't watched btw. I'm so crazy). I have the feeling I'll probably squish a few of them into one or two entries. I want to finish my BSG stuff by the time Bones starts up again, so I can devote all my flaily attention to it. Heh. Of course by then I'm sure I'll be doing a rewatch of BSG, so there's bound to be more OMGILOVETHISSHOWSOMUCH posting once it's done, but still.
(notice too how I've completely given up on commenting on episodes here without being spoilery. I'd apologize, but being this close to the end it is frakking impossible not to include spoilers, seriously)
For my commentary today I'm going to rock it in list-format, because it's easier. And also because it's been a while since I watched the episode, so I doubt I could talk about it in any kind of linear fashion.
That being said, let's get started. Here are the things I found noteworthy about "A Disquiet Follows My Soul." I will of course leave the most noteworthy scene of all for the grand finish, hee. (psst, I'll give you a hint: Roslin/Adama get nekkid!)
-Tigh, Six, and Doc Coddle in the first scene cracked me up. Tigh being all "I need a drink," and Coddle not caring about smoking in front of a pregnant cylon, like "she'll live." Haha. Awesome. On the other hand, though? I'm still not really down with the whole Six/Tigh thing. It's too weird and feels too random. It's like, what the hell, these two people do not go together. And considering how things end up, I'm not sure I see what the point was of them getting together other than to reveal that two cylons can procreate together. Which they could've addressed another way. And which they did, when they were talking about the 13th tribe stuff in the next episode. Oh well.
-Tigh brought the funny later on as well, when they were all talking about using cylon technology and Tyrol was like "their technology is much better. . .I mean our technology." and Tigh was like "maybe you'd like a chart." Ha! Loved that.
-Nicky and the "who's your Daddy?" plotline. This is another thing in this episode that I couldn't quite roll with, unfortunately. I don't remember them ever really laying the groundwork for that between Callie and Hot Dog, and don't see what the benefit of the plotline is other than making it so Hera is once again the only half human/half cylon baby around. I wonder if they didn't plan to make Tyrol one of the final five until after they'd already written Callie to be pregnant, and then later were like "oh crap! Now Hera's not so special anymore; we'd better fix that!" Who knows. I get why they felt it was necessary to do something like that (otherwise it would kind of frak up the Hera story, to be fair), but wasn't crazy about how it was executed. Felt too out-of-left-field. To play devil's advocate though, there were signs Tyrol might be a cylon back in the day when he kept having nightmares about it. So who knows. Maybe they did plan it, but just didn't fully think it through? It's hard to say.
-Adama and his pill-popping. I wonder if they're going to explain this. I kind of like that they don't though, actually. It's sort of just this unsaid thing, and you're to assume he's resorting to them either because of the stress Roslin's illness is putting on him, or all the cylon/human alliance stuff, or the ship falling apart, or most likely all of the above. But they just sort of show it to you, without putting up a big electric sign pointing at it, and I kind of like that. It's a subtle touch, and I like subtle touches.
-The picture of Roslin/Adama reframed and non bullet-smashed up in Adama's room again. There's really no point to me commenting on that though other than to reiterate my love of him having a picture of them up on his wall. Hee. *squishes him* Also, it's another example of a subtle touch (since it was just in the background, not something focused on this time). Oooh, and I just realized if I really wanted to put my overthinker hat on that I could analyze the symbolism of how their picture first got smashed with the bullet piercing the space between them (separating them in other words), but now that they've admitted their feelings to one another and are acting on them the picture is no longer shattered. But then again I'm probably thinking WAY too deeply about this one, heh.
-Gaeta and his revolutionary ways. Much as it pains me to see Gaeta be the one to start the mutiny, I thought it was done really well, and I particularly enjoyed that it was carried out through more than one episode so it had time to develop. I also appreciated how they made the mutiny this multi-layered thing. It wasn't just about people's hatred and mistrust of the cylons, or about Roslin & Adama not listening to their people; it was also about the personal fallout for Gaeta after losing his leg. I would've totally called foul if they didn't have consequences to that plotline, so that definitely worked for me. Especially because they also included throw-backs to "Collaborators" from season 3, when he was almost executed for working with the cylons on New Caprica. Now he's lost his leg to one, and three of the people who were going to execute him back then turned out to BE cylons, and Roslin and Adama are actually building an alliance with the cylons, and I think it just became too much for him to deal with. And I'm going to talk a lot more about the mutiny when I get to the next two episodes, but I will just say one more thing about it first: I loved that you can look at the mutiny from both sides' perspectives, and see how they could both be understood. This show does such a good job playing with the line between what's right and what's wrong. It's so the way things often are in the real world, and I love the show for being so adept at addressing that fact.
-Also? Gaeta had some great lines in this episode too. "Can't keep those toasters waiting." Hee. Plus the confrontation between him and Starbuck was good times as well, and she definitely kicked some ass in that scene. "I will hit a cripple." Ha! Do not mess with Starbuck, yo.
-Zarek joining up with Gaeta for the mutiny. I thought it was a little sad after he sort of bonded with Roslin on New Caprica, but honestly Zarek was one of those characters you knew you could never fully trust, so it made sense. He's charismatic and two-faced, and occasionally has a point, but always goes about trying to prove it in a terrible way. That's just him, and him being part of the mutiny totally fits that.
-There were fantastic themes at work in this episode too, in my opinion. Everything from transparancy in government and the responsibility of a leader to listen to their people (i.e. Adama not wanting to discuss Tigh remaining XO of the ship with the press, and also both his and Roslin's stubbornness on discussing the cylon-alliance with the fleet) to issues of racism (the people's fear of allowing cylons on their ship, and wanting to segregate them), and the question of how to move on after a war (I realize the war isn't over in this case, but they are beginning to make peace with at least some of their enemies, so it brings up the same conflicts). Shows and movies always deal with wars while they're still in progress, but it's so rare that a show addresses how a society moves on after the fighting, and how two former enemies can try to forgive one another and make peace. I love that this show is dealing with those issues here.
-The theme of prejudice and forgiving your enemy was also addressed in some of the deleted scenes from the last episode actually, when Baltar announces that cylons could be seen as God's children too, because they were created by man (who was in turn created by God per his argument), and some people walk out of the room in disgust. I think he was also the one who brought up the need to move past animosity. I thought that scene was interesting, particularly the way it was all said with the Number Six standing right there, and how Baltar encourages her to come into the room to listen to his "sermon" despite the other people's protests.
-Roslin/Adama. You know we'd get here eventually, didn't you? First off, they were *killing* me in the beginning of this episode, with Roslin avoiding Bill's phone calls and throwing all her pills in the trash with their theme song playing in the background. (remember, she decided to give up on her cancer treatments in the last ep) And then later she lies to him that she's going to go to the doctor for treatment, saying she'll do it after her jog (P.S. how adorable was she in her little jogging outfit?), but she totally doesn't. And btw I wish they'd kept the deleted scene from this ep where Adama is all yelling at the new deck chief for no reason and then turns and sees Roslin jogging all over the place (after he was like "just take it easy, okay?", so of course she runs around the whole dang ship like a crazy person, haha) and he's like "you have got to be kidding me." That scene really amused me. Between Roslin's ridiculousness and Adama's reaction, I couldn't help but laugh even though it was sad at the same time.
Back in the non-deleted part of the episode though, then you cut back to Roslin running around the ship all gung-ho, busting through groups of people and totally pushing them out of her way, and then she runs smack-dab into Adama who is just standing there looking at her like "nice try, Roslin. I know your game." Heh. And he's all "you look flushed, you look good. You're not supposed to look good, you're supposed to be in the sickbay," and she's like "so throw me in the brig, I can run in there." (Hee. Roslin, I love you.)
And then he tries to be like "the president's health is a security issue," so she calls his bluff like "fine, you can accept my resignation then." She is muy stubborn, yo. So then he grabs her arms and gets all earnest-face, like "we need you Laura" (i.e. also "I need you," obviously), and she tells him to let go of her (ugh, the angst!). And then says "I've played my role in this farce. The dying leader will lead the people to the bla bla. . .frakking bla bla." (p.s. way to be articulate there, Roslin. Hee) And is basically like "how long do I have to keep this up? Is there another role for me to play?" And she reminds him of what they talked about on New Caprica about living for today and that "tomorrow" might not be coming, and says "I think I've earned the right to live a little before I die. Don't you?" And he looks all sad and says yes, and she reaches up and kisses him and says "so have you, now get out of my way" and runs away.
GUH, the angst and the happy! All at once! I don't know what to do with my brain here, people. I will say though that I loved that scene, obviously, and that Mary McDonnell was fucking ROBBED for not getting an Emmy ever for her role on this show.
And here's where I drop the first part of my mini picspam on you guys. Come stare at the pretty with me, would you?
That is not a happy face.

This is Roslin's "you can't be angry at me when I'm this cute" face.

Ahh, the angst. It burns
And here is where I would include a pic of Roslin kissing Adama but damn it all to Hell if I can't find a decent screencap of that shot. That makes me very sadface indeed.
Moving on though, let's get back to the listy list:
-Interrupting the Roslin/Adama love-fest, I will also break in to give Adama props for his trickery while Zarek was in the cell. Way to have balls, Adama! That was pretty smooth.
-Also? After the tyllium mutiny starts, when Adama's like "Sometimes I really hate this job" that made me seriously laugh out loud. Heh. Adama's usually so serious when things like that are happening, so for him to just randomly be like "fuck this shit" is really funny.
-Anyway though, going back to the lovefest again now and skipping further stuff about the tyllium ship mutiny (because the real mutiny that everyone cares about doesn't start until the next episode anyway), the final scene leaves you with Adama in his bed all nekkid receiving a phone call from Tigh letting him know the tyllium ship has decided to behave, and you see Roslin's bracelet-covered wrist grabbing the phone from him, and it's like "OOOOOOOH MY GOOOOOD, SERIOUSLY?" Hee. And he's all "they found the tyllium ship. Do you care?" while he's kissing her shoulder all sweet-like, and she's like "no" as she smiles, and he just smiles back and says "neither do I." And then they continue to snuggle all full of freaking adorableness with candles lit all around the room, and the music in the background, and did I mention how she's totally bald in this scene because she has neither her wig nor her head-wrap on, and neither of them look like they give a damn whatsoever? IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL. He has totally listened to her desire to live for today, and it doesn't even matter that she's dying or that she doesn't have her hair, because they love each other and because that's all that matters in that moment. Gaaaaaaaah.
I mean, seriously, would you LOOK AT THEM:

I CAN'T EVEN TAKE IT, PEOPLE. LOOK AT HOW HAPPY THEY ARE. IT FILLS ME WITH UNSTOPPABLE SHIPPER JOY.
*takes deep breaths to calm the flail*
All right, I've composed myself now. Heh. *step away from the capslock, Rachael, and no one gets hurt*
Before I wrap this up though, here is the promised Vid of the Day. All this talk about cancer inspired me to include one of my favorite Scully cancer-arc vids, this time by LyleXF. Lyle's vids are just crazily good, so get used to them showing up in my vid recs. This one is also doubly touching because it was done for the Tribute to Leyla charity project (Leyla Harrison was a fanfic author who passed away from melanoma back in 2001. She was so well known by the community that the show actually named a character after her in the 8th season. Her fic was some of the earliest I ever read, back around '96/'97). This video is a lovely tribute to her. It's also extremely good just aside from that as well, and does a great job showcasing why Gillian Anderson so very much deserved the Emmy she won for her work in the 4th season.
Enjoy:
That reminds me, I should watch Office Space again sometime. I love that movie so much that I can't believe I don't own it. Give me back my stapler! Haha. Best work movie ever.

It's also extremely good just aside from that as well, and does a great job showcasing why Gillian Anderson so very much deserved the Emmy she won for her work in the 4th season.

My DVR recorded a rerun of Mad Men last night, so hopefully I'll have a chance to watch it when I get home from work today. I've heard great things about it so far, so I'm excited.
