I wrote this song for you, for you
Nov. 13th, 2009 12:33 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Apologies for the lengthy absence, folks. I've been duelling with a fail!body over the last week or so (seriously, body, is the period from hell with the migraines and the stomach-crazyness really necessary? And what's up with the cold? Didn't you just get over a cold? This is some kind of underhanded ploy to make me eat more fruits & veggies, isn't it? ISN'T IT? I'm onto you, immune system!), and that plus not getting enough sleep and trying to get back in the groove of my normal position at work = a tired, non-verbose Rach. That, and I was actually busy the last couple weekends, which is often when I let loose with the wordyness here. But I'm back now, and feeling like strappin' on the ole ramblin' boots, so here we go.
Re: Halloween, we didn't end up going to the zoo like we'd wanted, but I did go trick-or-treating with the kiddies that night. Jayden was Optimus Prime (as in the transformer. Last year he was Bumblebee. This kid is all about the transformers, yo), and Isabella was a white & pink cat. With fuzzy paws, ears on her head, and a giant tail. In other words, fucking cute. Heh. And yes, for those wondering, there will be pictures uploaded shortly.
(Also, as a random aside: While we were trick-or-treating, a real white cat started following us around, which I thought was hilarious. Especially because Isabella--in her own white cat costume--kept squealing and trying to get the cat, toddling after it & almost falling every other second in her big fuzzy paw-feet. So it was like OMG GIANT BABY CAT CHASING TINY REAL CAT OMG. Hee.)
On a lamer note, because my family is nearly incapable of allowing a holiday to pass without at least a little drama, my brother in law decided to act a fool the night before and largely tainted much of my Halloween with his alchy antics. Stupid family drama. So damn annoying. Seriously, would it be so wrong to just like punch him in the balls next time I see him? Or perhaps hit him over the head with a vase, a la Mad Men? Because it'd be 100% justified, I'm just saying.
In other family-related news, Mom is in one of her pill-popping manic phases, but at the moment it's more amusing to me than upsetting. Sometimes her crazy is just SO crazy that all you can do is laugh, you know? And right now her focus is directed on my sister, so it's easier to stay removed from it. You guys remember how my mom will just like *zone in* on someone, make them her project, and go crazy over it? Right. So at the moment her obsession is how my sister is apparently psychic, and how she should be researching her chakras, and how stupid she is for not starting up a website to make money from her ~abilities~ (this all comes btw from the fact that my sister claims her place is haunted, and so my mom is like "you see dead people! You have a gift!"), and how she needs to "THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!" This was also after my mom had invited herself over to my sister's for dinner the other night and then never showed because she was too busy driving across town to some random hospital so she could get painkillers for her imaginary toe infection. God, whatever. As long as the whole thing doesn't result in A. a trip to the psych ward, B. visits from the police, C. a car accident, or D. all of the above, then whatever. I can let it go.
And moving on to my last real-life tidbit, I found out today I'm getting a bonus for last month, even though my sales weren't good enough to qualify. But my boss must've recognized that it was impossible (or damn near) to reach those goals my first month back (for reasons too boring to go into), so he gave it to me anyway. That is so nice! Seriously. I did not expect to get anything at all, and voila, 125 extra bucks! I love getting unexpected extra money, it's almost better than the expected kind. Heh. And as to what I'll be spending it on? Girl please, I'll give you two hints:

In other words, my hard non-earned cash will be going to the purchase of "The Plan" (the latest BSG tv movie that has yet to actually air on tv. What's with the hold-up, SciFi? Or, excuse me, "SyFy". *cough*stupidnamechange*cough*) and season 4.0, which--for those paying attention--is the only remaining season I've yet to buy. (And which will mean I can stop rewatching Sine Qua Non and The Hub on megavideo over and over. Hee. What? Unabashed Adama/Roslin shipper here, are you surprised? You haven't forgotten my epic flail over those eps yet, have you?) And in regards to The Plan, I haven't seen it yet and thus am not sure whether to look forward to watching it based on how mixed its reviews are (some pretty positive, others not so much), but I'm definitely at least curious to see how it plays out what with the whole "first 180 days of the series from the cylon's pov" angle. And honestly it's only, what, $20? So it's not like I'm out that much dough if it does turn out to be disappointing. Plus if the DVDs get enough revenue, perhaps we'll get lucky and they'll make more tv movies in the future, eh? *crosses fingers for shamelessly shippy Roslin/Adama movie consisting of nothing but the two of them smoking New Caprica weed, reading Searider Falcon, talking about their ~Cabin~, and making flirty eyes at each other for an hour and a half straight* What, plot? Who needs plot? We don't need no stinkin' plot!
Which reminds me, speaking of Searider Falcon, you guys remember how I said here a while back that I had a major soft spot for the role books play in the Adama/Roslin relationship? And how I also felt that the books Adama would read to her in season 4 were an expression/symbol of his feelings for her? And how I wasn't sure if it was a common thing the fandom observed/took notice of? Right, now keep that in mind and watch this short clip:
See, Mary agrees with me! I feel so vindicated! Hee.
Ooh, and one more BSG-related thing before I forget: Who here saw the recent ep of Big Bang Theory with the cylon toaster? DUDE. Number One: That? Is awesome. On like so many levels. One of which is that cylons are referred to as toasters, so, YOU KNOW. Fun with puns! And, Number Two? WANT. WANT ONE NOW. XMAS IS COMING UP, PEOPLE, JUST A REMINDER.
And can I please just take a moment to also point out the many BSG shout-outs by 30 Rock lately? First with the "what the frak" t-shirt last season, and then the scene this season where they were watching the show with Jenna, and the random "what the frak, nerds?!" in one of the other recent eps? Clearly the writing staff for that show is comprised of giant nerds (I'm looking at you, Tina Fey! Haha) and I'd just like to say that I wholeheartedly approve. CARRY ON, 30 ROCK. CARRY ON.
But enough with that, and let's move on to some other tv-related ramblings, shall we?
Mad Men
Dudes, how much butt did Mad Men kick in those last few eps of the season? A lot, am I right? First off, the eppy where Betty found out about Don's past? ~Fantabulous~. Also, the JFK assassination ep? SO GOOD. And even though I know it was totally different, I have to say it kind of made me think back to 9-11 in terms of how it felt with people's reactions. I remember on that day, and during the first few days immediately after, it was like no one was watching anything except the news, and everyone was just walking around in this stunned, quiet daze. And even though the circumstances in this case were obviously different, the episode still shared a similar feeling of national shock, which I thought was conveyed really well.
Also, it's funny that they just got to JFK on the show, because I was just thinking about him the other day. My afternoon bus driver has been talking with one of the other regulars about their high school days in the '60s lately, and it made me think "wow, you know, this person was in high school when JFK was shot." And then made me begin thinking how old he would've been when MLK Jr was shot, or when Vietnam happened, or Woodstock, etc. It's kind of a silly/obvious thing to consider, I know, but it's the type of thing that always fascinates me. How old a person was/is during a certain time-period or event and how that might or might not influence their life and worldview. You know what I mean? Same goes for the differences a person's life might experience just based on where they were born. The smaller age-related differences get me too, like how people born in the eighties (such as myself) grew up with rotary phones, while kids like my nephew will have never lived in a world where cell phones didn't exist, and people in Mad Men's day were still using telegrams. It's just kind of a funny thing to think about, when you stop & consider it.
And as for the finale, I have the feeling I would've appreciated it even more if I'd been watching the show longer, but I still really enjoyed it. I mean, honestly, who doesn't enjoy a business-coup every now and then? And all the Don/Betty stuff? My heart! Gah.
I may have to go back and rent some of the older episodes during the hiatus, methinks. That way I'll know a little more of what these characters' stories are by the time the next season starts & I'll be all prepared. When will the next season start anyway, do you guys know?
Glee
-Okay, first off? WAY TO PAY RESPECTS TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE MUSICALS, SHOW. They left out my favorite part of the song though (the part at the end when she flies up above the stage), but STILL. AWESOME. Also? Kurt! Dude. Loved him in this episode. Loved him, loved his dad, loved him screwing up the note, loved the whole thing.
-No Will/Emma/Ken stuff. A+! Heh.
-Suuuuuuuue. Jane Lynch, what's the deal, are you trying to make me cry or something? Because you almost succeeded, not gonna lie. Sue + her sister = me verklempt.
-Puck/Quinn. I like them together and find them a lot more interesting at the moment than Rachel/Finn, personally. At least based on what I've seen so far anyway. But I still wish Quinn would cut out the Maury Povich lying about the babydaddy routine.
-the side-characters getting more time in the spotlight. Liked this and hope to keep seeing more of it. I think the show's more interesting when you're not always only focusing on the same few characters & storylines. This week they mixed it up a bit, and I thought it was really enjoyable.
Okay, and that's about it for tonight. I'll try to update again sometime this weekend if I can, because I'd like to also talk about some other shows like So You Think You Can Dance & Bones (which, heads up: I haven't watched yet tonight as I had to DVR it to watch tomorrow night. So ixnay on any spoilery comments until then, por favor) but for now I need to get my little butt in bed.
As always, I'll leave you with the Vid of the Day before I go. I meant to post this one a few weeks ago actually, in honor of October's Breast Cancer Awareness month, but better late than never right? This video is technically supposed to be a shipper vid for Roslin/Adama, but its main focus is clearly her cancer (breast cancer, obviously) and how they both deal with it. And seriously, it is just *so* lovely. Like, okay, so the first time I watched it I was on my period, thus exacerbating my "It's so beautiful! Sniff!" reaction, but still. Hormones or not, there aren't many fanvids that make me cry, and this one did. From the "you will make it. . .she would want you to" part forward I was pretty much a goner. Heh. Like, really. It was all downhill from there. But all joking aside, it's actually a very simple vid, but for some reason it just really touched me, and I absolutely love the song as well.
So, all that being said, enjoy:
(P.S. this one was created by murphy987987, and contains only spoilers up to season 4.0, so no 4.5 spoilers or finale stuff.)
