rachg82: (fanfic roslin/adama)

First off, thanks to everyone for their comments to my whiny flu post. The Vomit Olympics have ceased and I'm now just dealing with the flu's stuffy-headed, ear-achy leftovers. Which are actually hurting kinda bad at the moment, but which are still much, much better than the "Oh hi there, breakfast. Nice to see you again" vomity funtimes.

But hey, at least I felt better enough by last night to work on a couple new icons (one of which I'm using now). This whole icon-creating business is very addictive, I must say. Now if only I had a better photo-software to use, since the one I currently have is super basic. Oh well, though. Still fun!

Moving on, I still have lots of real-life stuff to get into (Thanksgiving, babysitting my nephew/niece, etc), but I'm going to save it for another entry so I can cut the length on this one. In the meantime, I've got a smorgasbord of tv-shows to talk about in this entry--especially since, hi, there's not a whole lot else you can do minus sleeping when you're sick & couch-ridden for six days straight--so let's jump right in without further ado.

Because one always ends up watching the most random crap in the universe when sick, I somehow managed to watch a marathon of "Hoarders" on cable this week. Have any of you watched that show before? I got kind of hooked, I have to admit. Heh. And can I just say that I have never felt more motivated in my life to throw out half my belongings and clean like a madwoman? My God. I mean, I'm not anywhere near as bad as those poor people, but I am a bit of a packrat and while watching it I was just like "oh my God, why do I still have so many old boxes of clothes? And why haven't I thrown out that old tv yet?! Must clean!" So yeah, once I feel a bit more physically energetic, there's gonna be one hell of a cleaning spree going on up in here. Perfect timing for it anyway actually, since I'm sure I have plenty of old clothes that are still nice enough to give away to Goodwill, and I know lots of people out there could use some warm clothing right about now.

Otherwise, aside from a bunch of WWII documentaries and catching up some on The Prisoner miniseries (more on this once I actually finish watching it), I mostly tried to distract myself this week by breaking out Bones & BSG DVDs. Which leaves me with a few things to say now about both:

1. Re: Season 1 and Season 3 Bones. I honestly think it's impossible not to be cheered up by the Bones Xmas episodes, even when you're cursing the flu gods. I mean, REALLY. How much do I love both of those eps? Secret Satan and Christmas lung fungus and poor Brennan opening presents all by herself (okay this part is sad, but it's still wonderful!) and Wong Foo's and Caroline feeling puckish and mistletoe-kissing and "I have things to do. . .y'know, with bones. . ." and "thanks for the gum" and "we have to sniff their butts!" and "I love my gift, Booth" and NEED I GO ON? God, they are just pure joy. I can't even say how much I'm looking forward to next week's Xmas ep. And for those who haven't seen the promo yet, CHECK IT:

(P.S. [livejournal.com profile] keenai: I'm putting a space here in case you consider s5 promos spoilery. Let me know if you don't care about this type of thing in the future though.)

"Anyone for mistletoe?" Haha, Cam! Have I mentioned lately how much I love you? Because I do, like a thousand times over. Also? Zooey! The whole thing looks like so much fun based on the clips I've seen so far. I'm totally excited.

2. Re: BSG. I did end up finally buying season 4.0 a week or so ago, so I spent a lot of time this week rewatching that season while I waited for the room to stop spinning. And while watching some of the commentaries I learned a few awesome little factoids (which I'm sure everyone else in the fandom probably already knew, but shh): Eddie (the actor who plays Adama, obviously) not only improvised the first kiss between his character and Roslin back in season 2, but he also improvised the kiss and the ring in Roslin's "The Hub" vision *and* the moment in "Escape Velocity" when he closes the book & just starts talking to her, which the writer said was Eddie's way of showing that Adama wasn't actually reading from the book at that moment & was instead just saying how he felt and pretending to read. Um, how much do I love that? A LOT, that's how much. I'd always wondered about that scene for exactly that reason, trying to figure out if Adama just had those lines memorized or what, and I love finally having an answer. EDWARD JAMES OLMOS, I HEART YOU, YOU BIG FAT SHIPPER YOU.

Also: I'd forgotten how many great moments "Escape Velocity" actually had. Case in point, the "you came into my thoughts" book-moment of all-consuming adorableness already mentioned above, but also the scene at the beginning when he first tells her about the book and then carries her bag for her as they walk down the hall arm-in-arm (omg cuuuuuute), and we of course can't forget the Roslin/Baltar scene of HBIC bad-assery in the brig at the end. Dude. I mean, it's no "I AM COMING FOR ALL OF YOU!" eye-teeth speech (which: haha, I still can't get over that. I love it so much. Like, who threatens people with their teeth? Roslin, that's who), but it's still pretty epic. I so want to make a "Roslin is not in the mood to indulge you" icon in tribute to that scene, heh. I bet others have probably made some with that quote already though. I'd be surprised if they hadn't.

Moving on though & onto the rest of my normal weekly tv-ramblage:

Glee

-Okay, who is it on that staff who is totes in my head, picking songs that always make me weepy? First it was "I'll Stand By You," then "Imagine," then "True Colors" and now the Charlie Chaplin "Smile" song from My Girl 2? *sniff*

-Emma gained so many points for me when she defended Ken to Will. Good on ya, Emma!

-Quinn standing up for the Glee kids. Aw! I like Quinn.

-The fake-pregnancy storyline finally coming to an end. Hallelujah. I was sad for both of them though, but am glad it's over. And gotta say, while I felt bad for Will, I would've had even more pity for him if he hadn't been so busy flirting with another woman the entire time he thought his wife was pregnant. Just sayin'.

-The yearbook plotline. I understand why this bummed some people out, but I was pretty okay with it once I thought about it. I would've also been cool with them not showing the photo being defaced, but it felt realistic to me that it was. And it made the fact that Quinn stood up for them carry more weight in my opinion, because she must've known that would happen & she requested the full-spread photo anyway. The whole thing just fit the mood of the episode for me. Smile, even when your heart is breaking, you know? Just like the song says. All in all, not a very funny episode, but I still enjoyed it.

So You Think You Can Dance

-Loved Ellenore & Jacob dancing together that night. They were fabulous, just as expected. And I'm starting to really like Sonya's choreography as well. I thought she was a little one-note in the beginning, but quite a few of my favorite dances now this season have been by her.

-Mollee: I can't believe she hasn't gone home yet. Nothing against her personally, I just don't think her talent matches that of the others at this point.

-Legacy. Still love him, even though I don't remember being particularly impressed by him this week. This was sort of a "meh" week in general for me though. There were only two dances that really stood out for me, the Ellenore/Jacob one above being the first, and. . .

-The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers being the second. See how I pulled off the smooth segue there? Hee. Really though, how amazing were they? I have to say, I actually felt oddly touched by the performance, although I can't put my finger on why. I just thought it was really kind of unique & lovely, and definitely one of the coolest hip hop routines I've seen in a while. Loved the song choice, loved the choreography, loved the whole thing really.

Here's a clip for those who haven't seen it yet:

And, finally, this week's Bones

-I think they managed to make the "giant Avatar ad" aspect of the episode feel mostly natural. I mean, I know they were asked to do something for the movie, so it didn't come about as a natural thing in the first place, but it could've felt so much more ridiculous and annoying than it did. I wasn't nearly as bugged by it as I was worried I would be. I groaned a little bit when they were watching the trailer, but for the most part it was actually kind of a fun plotline.

-Sweets, Hodgins, and the intern bonding. Like I said above, I actually thought this part of the episode was fun, and it was the friendship element of the story that sold it for me. That and I love watching characters on my shows act like scifi-loving nerds. Heh. Also, remember how I said back before the season started that I wanted Sweets' character to be used in a smarter fashion? I think they have done a great job with that so far this year. Not once in this episode did I find myself going "Why is Sweets hanging around?" His presence made sense, which allowed him to add to the episode rather than distract from it. Thumbs up for that. I'm also liking this intern more now as well, AND this plotline fills my "I like getting to see the squints act like friends" quota. I'd still like a few more scenes like back in the day when Brennan was there with the rest of them too, all drinking or eating together, etc, but still. Good times.

-On a similar note, while the case was pretty boring, I thought this was another episode where they did a good job letting all the squints (including Brennan) play a role in solving the case in ways that made sense for them.

-The body. Um. FUCKINGGROSSOHMYGOD. I literally covered my eyes. And yeah, that's about all I have to say on that subject aside from maybe this: SMELLS LIKE CHRISTMAS. Haha. (Remember? See, I told you guys I'd pull that back out!)

-Booth still being impressed by Brennan's ability to identify the victim. Heh. That was random, but cute.

-Bow chica bow wow! Or, as Brennan says it: klacka-mow-boom-chica-wow-mow-boom. Hee! God, that made me laugh so hard. I will probably never be able to hear someone say that ever again without thinking of her. And honestly, I think if I were Booth in that scene I probably would've just lost it & been like "Okay, THAT'S IT. I give up! Come here so I can squish you. You are too damn cute right now for me to handle."

-Booth's vest. My first reaction to its reappearance was "Ha, DB, way to listen to all the fangirls online squeeing over you & your three-piece suits", but then I thought about it some more and I wonder if the vest he keeps wearing was inspired by the coma-dream. Because remember, he dressed like that in the finale. Makes me wonder a little if it's a deliberate wardrobe choice that they keep bringing it back. What do you guys think? I'm overthinking it, aren't I? (it's fun, though! Hee. Come join me in Over-Analyze Everything Land! We have cookies!)

-Hodgins' tattoo. Ha! I so did not think they would ever address that again. That caught me off-guard. Also? WOW, HODGINS. Work out, much? I mean, damn, I'm just sayin'. I don't normally look at him that way, but HI THERE. Gotta give credit where credit's due.

-Brennan's expression when she looked at the autistic boy. Something about her face there kind of got me. I think she might've been remembering Zack, or was maybe even relating to him on some mild level herself, who knows. But either way I caught the look and thought it was nice.

-Booth & Brennan's final scene together. Not a lot of shippy moments in this episode, but that final scene was pretty dang cute, am I right? Let's recap, shall we?

1. "I believe that due to my superior learning curve, I can beat you at this game, despite your superlative strength & your remarkable reflexes. . .How do you start the game?"

Heeee. Oh, Bones. Way to talk major smack and then not even know that you need a quarter to start. Please never change.

2. "I don't understand your system, but I can see that it works." Um, here's where I'd try to articulate my response to that, but I'm too busy trying to hold in the capslocky flail. I'll just say this: He's her Babylonian number system, you guys! And she can see that it works! Even though she doesn't understand it! And then they banter about whether she lost the game because of her math! Hee. Okay, honestly, I may lose my mind by the time these two get together. Like, there'll just be this puddle of shippery goo in the place where I used to stand and a faint echo of "OMGYOUGUUUUUUUUUYS" resounding in the far-off distance. Just giving fair warning ahead of time.

And that's it for this entry. My Vid of the Day this time was actually inspired by Glee's episode this week. I had forgotten where I originally knew the song from (for some reason my initial thought was "Beaches" before I remembered I'd first heard it in "My Girl 2") and when I was looking it up I came across this cover of the song by Judy Garland. Number one, I love Judy Garland just in general (and not just because of the "I'm totes related to her!" bragging rights, heh), but aside from that this is just a wonderful performance of the song anyway (about halfway through when she really starts busting it out? Gah. Kills me, especially knowing all the struggles she went through in her life), and considering how I know a few of you on my flist right now are having a pretty shitty time of it, I thought it'd be a nice song to share for that reason alone.

Take it away, Judy!

Space is not needed for promos!

That's a pretty good description of the League's routine. It was touching and strangely haunting. I think the music had a lot to do with it as well as the movement and emotion of the dancers. So, you know, the performance.

Yeah, I loved the lighting that was used as well, and how the one guy who came out all slow in the middle of the performance almost looked like he was "composing" the other dancers (if that makes sense).

All of that and no mention that Sweets KISSED ANOTHER GIRL. Oh, Sweets. I'm so disappointed in you. (And it wasn't the first kiss that got to me, but the second one. Sigh.)

Ooh, you're right. I totally forgot to mention that and it bothered me too! Bad Sweets, bad!
