All right, who's in the mood for some TV Ramblage? Because I've got a two-for-one Bones & Dollhouse special for you all today. I actually also wrote up a whole thing for RL/Family stuff too, but now that I look at it I think it'd just be too much to include all in the same entry. So I'll post it in a separate entry right after this. And then you guys can read it or skip it as time allows. Sound good? Good.
Bones: The X in the File
Loved this one, and not just for the XF throwbacks. The case by itself wasn't anything all that interesting, but I was still thoroughly entertained by everything else. It reminded me of "Man in the Bear" a little, because of the whole "out of town" aspect. I LOVE when they go out of town, because the locals they deal with are always hilarious. And I love watching Booth & Brennan out of their element, interacting with new people. I wish they'd do it all the time.
And in regards to the XF throwbacks, I enjoyed the hell out of them. The XF ringtone at the beginning cracked me up, and like
britishwannabe1 I almost thought they were going to continue it into the credits. HOW AWESOME WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN? Like, all the Bones actors, but set to the XF theme-song? Oh my God, I would've died. It could've been like the X-Files/Cops crossover episode! Where they started it out with the Cops theme song and had clips of Mulder & Scully & the case? God I fucking love that episode so, so much. But anyway, I digress. Heh.
Other XF stuff I loved?
-The red-eyed "aliens"/coyotes. Raise your hand if you immediately thought of "Detour." Mothmen FTW!
-All the shots of the car on the road. Such an X-Files thing. As Scully said, "but we, we, just keep drivin'."
-Sweets describingMulder believers. He should've thrown in the word "paramasturbatory" for good measure. Hee. (((Ed Asner)))
-Lots of hallway scenes. Except these didn't have the inevitable forehead kisses and/or flashlight beam-action that the X-Files hallway scenes would've. But still!
-LANGLY! If only they could've had all three of the Lone Gunmen. That would've been fab.
-The Max Fenig Trailer o' UFO Obsession. I know I wasn't the only one thinking of him during that scene. Aww, Max. <3
-Bones in her Scully Scrubs, checking out the alienorisit? body. Slicin' & dicin'!
-Staring up at the stars. To this day I can never see two characters stare up at the stars without thinking of the scene between Mulder & Scully at the end of "Closure." Well, that, and the Unfinished Business scene with Adama/Roslin of course. Heh. But that's neither here nor there.
-And lastly, the open-ended "Did you hear that?" ending. SO X-FILES. I was just surprised they didn't cut to a shot of the red-eyes in the darkness before they faded to black. Heh.
And now, onto my non XF-related thoughts:
-Booth & Brennan and the alienorisit? body. SO CUTE. Brennan's scream! Booth and the gun! "Those terms are satisfactory." Hahaha. *squishes them*
-The sheriff. He was great.
-Brennan and her not literally accurate, but satisfying colloquialisms. Hee.
-Cam & Hodgins. Is it just me, or was there something going on there? I mean, I know Hodgins was dealing with his jealousy/pain over Angela & Wendell and all, but I definitely sensed something between him & Cam as well. Specifically I mean the scene where they're in the lab and Cam walks away right before Angela/Wendell enter the frame. Before they showed up, his eyes TOTALLY trailed after her all moonfaced & smiley. And while I haven't been a Cam/Hodgins shipper (mostly because there's already enough shipper action between these characters as it is. They can't ALL date. This is a workplace, not "Friends"), I have to admit I kinda dug that. I loved Angela & Hodgins in the beginning, but I'm not really seeing her as good for him right now, and he & Cam do have a fun vibe together. But I still don't know if I can totally ship it because of the whole "my God, will they ALL date each other by the time the series is over?" thing. It might be best if they just stay friends, and Cam meets someone outside the lab. What are your guys' thoughts?
-Angela/Wendell. I have no interest in them at all really. Except that I like Wendell and don't want to see his little heart get broken. But we all know it's going to happen. And I really wish they'd cool it in the workplace, considering Hodgins works there. I wanted to shout at my tv screen when they were kissing in the lab. First off, not professional. And second off, hello Angela, your ex works there. And Wendell, her ex is your friend. I know it's over between them (and I respect Angela's right to move on, and liked Wendell being so upfront about it with Hodgins), but can't you just wait until you go home & show a little consideration to their history together? Sheesh.
-Hodgins' jealousy. Even though I can't get into Angela/Wendell together, I was really interested in Hodgins' feelings about it. I loved the experiment when he blew off "Wendell's" head. Hee. And I really, really loved the scene between him & Sweets at the end. "You are a good guy" and "Can I just sit here for a minute?" That was actually really kind of touching. And it goes without saying at this point that I loved Sweets in that scene as well. He is just such a great friend.
-Aliens = anthropologists. "No probing! No probing!" Haha, that was fucking great. And I LOVED Brennan joking back. It's so much fun seeing her get to relax and tease back for once. And as much of a hardcore shipper as I am, I also love their friendship scenes just as much. And think it's good that they throw those in as well to balance all the "OMG are they about to kiss?" moments. Makes the pairing more well-rounded, and makes the USTy moments more special too, because it's not something you just expect to get every episode.
All in all, was it one of the "oh my God, that was amazing!" episodes? No. But was I completely entertained? Yes. So, thumbs up.
Dollhouse: The Attic
Dude, so much to say about this one. It could've warranted its own entry, seriously. But I'm going to try to just breeze right through it because I still haven't even watched last night's episode and would really like to catch up on all my recaps for the show before next week's finale. So here we go:
-First off, there are few things in the world of television that I love more than a dream sequence/episode on a Joss Whedon show. No show does dreams like his do. They are amazing. They're always so creative, visually stunning, and authentic feeling (i.e. they feel like a dream to me). I mean, there's a reason "Restless" is still my favorite Buffy episode to this day (and we won't even get into my love for some of the other random dream sequences on that show, particularly all the Buffy/Faith dreams, but also the prophetic dreams Buffy had in season 2's "Surprise", etc). And this ep reminded me of that in a few ways, as well as the Angel episode from season five where Spike was being sucked into hell. For one, just like in Restless, Echo & the rest of them were being stalked by something that wanted to kill them. And everything was also extremely fluid, transitioning from room to room & place to place, with things appearing that shouldn't (i.e. the tree & the snow), but with this underlying reason to it, just like how dreams really work. And just like in that Angel episode, the nightmares in this one are CREEPY AS HELL. I was so freaked out by the appearance of Whiskey and her cut-up face, and Sierra's rapist reappearing too, but especially the Asian man. God. That was just disturbing on SO MANY LEVELS to me. From the "I have to enjoy myself" & his denial about being in The Attic, to the amputated legs, and the chefs in the kitchen, and gaaaaah. So creepy. BUT I LOVED IT.
-The symbolism of the fluid that the characters are placed in. This is a theme I've noticed on not only this show, but also BSG & The X-Files (not to mention movies like The Matrix). And it usually consists of exactly this kind of thing: an almost amniotic kind of liquid and some kind of metaphor for being either reborn or somehow mentally or physically altered by it. With the X-Files it was the clones/hybrids in the tanks (in "Momento Mori"), with BSG it was the cylons and their ability to resurrect, and in Dollhouse it's The Attic. I don't think it's just a convenient way to demonstrate some kind of "birth." I think it actually represents our fear that technology has somehow altered humanity in a fundamental way, so as to be shown as perverting even the most natural of life events. And in Dollhouse I think this was especially apparent by the fact that after they're placed in it (and become part of the "mainframe"), they have to actually "die" to escape, and are thus reborn. Know what I mean? Anyway, it's just something I've noticed & think is interesting. *takes off literary analysis hat*
-DOMINIC! Oh my God, I flailed. I was so happy to see him back. Like I said in my last entry, as much as I enjoy my Adelle/Topher crack!pairing, my real pairing on the show for so long was Adelle/Dominic, until he was put in The Attic of course. And I just love him by himself too. I mean, he was a jerk at first, all trying to kill Echo and what-not (P.S. loved the "glad I didn't kill you" part at the end, hee), but it makes sense now that you know he was there undercover. Plus this episode reminded me how much that character brought the funny, with the whole "Highlander" reference by Echo (hee!) and his reaction to the two Victors. I loved how he was just all "Okay!" when the one disappeared. Hahaha.
-"This is the shape of things to come." Dude, what is with me watching shows with that expression? Haha. For the record, I am SO taking that as a shout-out to BSG, because while I know it's a common expression in general, I also know Joss & some of the other writers are BSG fans and that expression carried MAJOR significance in the BSG world. It was funny seeing Dollhouse's take on it though, because when you first heard it said on BSG it was this grand, chilling, gorgeous thing with the Opera House & the music (ahhh, the music! LOVE) and the long red carpet & the kissing & the almost heavenly kind of light, and it was like the world had already ended, and maybe this was their chance at a new beginning. With Dollhouse, it's the complete opposite. It's like "the world hasn't ended yet, BUT IT'S GOING TO. Would you like to witness the upcoming destruction?" And it's like, oh Joss. You do love your apocolyptic tales, don't you? Hee. I loved it though.
-"Children playing with matches, and they burned the house down." Hence the subject heading today. I really liked that line. It totally sums up how people became involved with the dollhouse, thinking they were just furthering technology & providing a service, when really they were ushering in complete destruction. It's just fucking epic.
-And lastly. . .wait for it. . .*drumroll*. . .ADELLE DEWITT IS NOT EVIL! She has not become Darth Vader! Yaaaaay. Hee. I totally jumped off my couch in glee when the camera panned to her, and Echo was all "Your plan worked." There may have been fist pumping, but you didn't hear it from me. Haha. And I loved that scene at the end where Adelle is like ~gathering the troops~ and preparing to bring the house down. YESSSS. It's such a Joss Whedon move, bringing you in in the middle of things, with the whole Scooby Gang already set on their plan to lay the smackdown on the Big Bad, and you not knowing how it's gonna go down but knowing it's gonna be awesome. And sure, you could say he's repeating a story-writing technique here, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it, you know? It works everytime, and I always love it. So keep on keepin' on, Joss! *smooches*
And that's it! Like I said above, I still plan to recap the next season 2 ep ("Getting Closer") as well as season 1's "Epitaph One," but I haven't seen last night's episode yet, so please don't say anything about it if you comment to this entry, or I WILL FUCK YOU UP. Haha. Seriously though, if you value your life, KEEP THOSE LIPS SEALED.
For our Vid of the Day, we're gonna go with this Jossverse dream-centric vid (by mclarhe) in honor of my above-noted love affair with dream episodes/scenes on Joss Whedon shows. Unfortunately there aren't any Dollhouse clips, but it's chock-full of dream-clips from both Buffy and Angel, and I can't think of a more appropriate vid to go with this entry considering the subject matter of my Dollhouse ramblage, can you?
