As promised, here is my second entry of the night--set aside all special-like for TV, music-sharing, and random rambly randomness. As one does.

1. Continuing my tidal wave o' recs (this isn't necessarily a new official "thing"--I just feel like doing it right now. I'm blaming it on the loss of Facebook. I usually share songs on there. I got into the habit from another friend of mine), here are

(Yes, that tells you pretty much all you need to know about the mood of the section I'm dealing with. I'm hoping it helps me deal with the writer's block that's suddenly taken over. If that doesn't cut it, Philip Glass should. His stuff always does.)


2. Parks & Rec: I won't lie; I girlishly flailed. Andy + April = 4eva! *skips through fields of daisies* Except since I'm me, and since April is April, the daisies are of course dead. It being February and all. Heh. But it's the thought that counts.

3. Community: Even with my mood being so low, this episode still cracked me up. I mean, for the love of Jesus, TROY. IN THE BATHROOM. Hahahaha. "Set phasers on LOVE ME!" With his faaaace. "Reading rainbow![/runs off screaming]" I was dying.

4. Bones:

I don't actually have a whole lot to say about this one. I thought it was fairly adorable, to be honest. Nothing amazing, but decently entertaining & cute. I know some people didn't understand why Hodgins struggled to think of a gift for Angela (based on previous behavior), but to me it made sense. They're newly married, and it's their very first Valentine's Day as husband & wife, so there's a lot more pressure. Also, I'm still sittin' pretty on my "he's sympathetically magnant" theory ("magnant" = man!pregnant, ™ me), so, y'know, he's metaphorically hormonal & spazzy. Mood swings--what are ya' gonna do?

And if you don't believe me? Rewatch the last few eps again. Note him throwing things at poor Eeyore & swiping Cam's food. THE DEFENSE RESTS, YOUR HONOR. Magnant. Like I said.

Cam, meanwhile, well, what can I say? She's an HBIC. As usual. Do your thing, girl. (And what)

P.S. I officially love Paul for that moment between them in the lab. Ha.

I was happy to see Brennan getting some calls. They haven't addressed her love life since season 4, really, aside from Hacker--although they established back then that she tends to keep things fairly casual & periodic. So it didn't seem strange to me for her to receive calls from three men on Valentine's Day, especially since she'd told Hannah she was thinking of "moving on" (i.e. she may have begun responding to people again/started sending out signals, etc). It's true that this show gets clumsy sometimes with bringing personal things up about the characters in staccato fashion (in that they might bring something up once in a blue moon & then ignore it for, like, two years. Hee), but that's sort of just their way 90% of the time, so I don't have a problem with it. I assume if it's brought up once, that's their way of telling us to assume that's *always* the way it is--as reasonable per whatever the circumstances are at least (so if it's not the type of thing to always exist, then at least the foundation has been laid for future issues. You get the idea)--& we're to fill in the blanks, etc. X-Files was similar in some ways; some huge shit would go down & then they'd be like, "AND NOW WE WON'T TALK ABOUT IT. SHHH." I'm used to it.

(seriously though, re: XF? Scully told Mulder she had terminal cancer & everything was EPIC & omgFLAIL, and then the show didn't even *address* it again for, what, a MONTH? And even then it was only because she had a nosebleed in front of Skinner? It didn't get mentioned again with Mulder until freaking "Elegy"! That was like eight episodes after "Momento Mori"! Oh, X-Files. Hee.)

Yeah, so I cut Bones slack here. I'm a very understanding fangirl. Like, in the days of XF fanfic? Those authors had to grasp at freakin' straws to know what Scully would wear in her off-hours. The show let her dress casually, what, less than a handful of times? But we knew they *must've* expected us to assume she still wore jeans & such more often than we were shown because COME ON. Make sense? So, yes. Once again, I'm used to that type of thinking. ~The characters magically keep existing when the episodes end.~ (and THAT'S when all the shit goes down! Heh. Just kidding)

Either way though, I LIKE Bones getting attention, so it works for me. And of course you guys know I have no problem with her dating more than one person at a time (if she's not with Booth), so definitely don't go there with me.[/sassy]

Also, I can fanwank the fact that the storyline might've felt a little abrupt for some too (to me, it was just abrupt in a fun/cracky way, but still) because I do believe she probably did take a break from dating for a while--even during season 4 & 5--but considering the things I noted above, I don't think they HAD to do some big exposition explaining anything before letting her get a bunch of calls. It had already been established. The only thing I would maybe suggest to make the ep more subtle would've been taking out some of the hokey background music (that's a surefire way to make storylines seem over-the-top, regardless of good writing/acting), but I've already MORE than said my peace on that subject in the past, so we'll move on.

I will say that I actually liked the way they handled the storyline with Brennan's suitors (hee, "suitors"). Considering the circumstances of last week, and the fact that they were on a case, it seemed right to me that she'd turn people down, and she was cracking me up with the way she did it. Plus, Booth? HA. Tripping, tripping, tripping. "I am not her mother!" Oh, sure, dude. When she rejects you, it's time to move on & lollygag around with Hannah right in front of her. When you reject her, you've gotta cockblock at every turn. Mmm-hmm. I see you there. SUCH A MAN. Heh. I love it, though. He just can't help himself. You know his brain is just having a nuclear meltdown--turning into The Hulk somewhere in his hypothalamus (*tears apart limbic system*)--picturing her with that secret service agent.

Who else noticed too how Brennan was all, "Let me call you back to tell you no" (which: hee!), like she was saying that for Booth's benefit? Ending the call because, hello, he was Jealous McPossessiveson & all up in her grill & what-not, but totally threw that in there when she didn't have to. She could've just said she'd call him back & left it at that. THEN she was all, "What's the good news so we can end this on a happy note?", all chin-up & tucked in, like, "LORD, HELP ME." Hahaha.

Don't think I didn't notice too how ~obvious~ Booth was in mentioning to Brennan that he'd be at the shooting range. Hee. WAY TO TACITLY INVITE HER, YOU BIG TRYING-TO-BE-TOUGH-SOFTIE. *pinches his cheek*

My favorite thing of all though? Other than the TOTAL reference to "The End in the Beginning" with Clark in that outfit? Was the second reference with Brennan bringing out those mobster guns. Come on! So obvious. Booth's dream was such a mobster-wannabe dream. You know it was.

The fact that she did that for him as a gift? And managed to do so as a partner/friend, in honor of the Valentine's Day massacre, while still honoring his boundaries/emotional state at the moment? BRENNAN, I LOVE YOUUUUUUUU. I know I say it, like, every week, but I don't care. I just love you.

She was so cute too, all "Was this a good idea?" CAN I PLEASE JUST TACKLE-HUG HER? ONCE?

And Booth? Shooting a heart? HEE. Right there with you, dude. Except, homie, please. Don't even act like you're not a romantic. I guarantee you all he falls asleep every night thinking of nothing but "TemperanceBrennanTemperanceBrennanTemperanceBrennanAHHHHHHMAKEITSTOP!"

Eh, turns out I did have a few things to say after all. I'm verbose like that.

That's pretty much it though. I give it a thumbs-up. Certainly more enjoyable than most of the season 6 episodes so far. It brought a smile to my face. I DEFINITELY need that right now. I really liked seeing them happy together & acting like friends again. It's nice. So, yes, things are moving in the right direction, as far as I'm concerned. It's all good.

*edited to add AGAIN: I'm totally never gonna get anywhere with this fic, because I can't stop sharing music here, but whatev. Heh. NEVERMIND THAT. I'm still listening to Philip Glass & this song makes a perfect B/B anthem, so it's totes appropriate to include it with this review. Two lovers on a park bench! 1, 2, 3, 4! Do you love me? Einstein! For serious now.

I can't help but wonder if Brennan always gets these calls and usually ignores them while working, but was purposely answering in front of Booth so that she could turn them down and have him hear it. Repeatedly. She was rather loud and obvious about it, even though she was supposedly trying to excuse herself and go off to the side with her phone. I don't think she's gonna come right out and confront him with her feelings after his meltdown last week, but she'd want to make sure he knows that she's waiting for him.

Also, afaic, for the rest of forever "gun" will always and automatically = "penis" in Bones-world. Thank you so much, GG. Every time Booth goes a-shootin' I instantly start imagining his junk.

That's possible, although do you think they still would've made a point of showing her answering a call with Cam too in that case? Though, to be fair, that also might've been the show's way of making it clear that Brennan wasn't wasting any time in shutting romance DOWN on his behalf, heh. She was in no mood, and I'm sure a good deal of that had to do with Booth. (i.e. maybe she does normally ignore them during work hours, like you said. It makes sense.)

This episode left me smiling and sometimes you just need that after a big emotional episode. I know some people didn't like the plot device of the rush-to-solve-the-murder-so-I-can-go-on-a-date, but I can suspend my disbelief with the best of them.
I really liked Angela in this episode. She was just quiet ans supportive instead of over the top. And I'm with you on Hodgins. Totally first time dad mode.
Way to hit us over the head with the heart on the target, Show. I couldn't help picturing Booth at the tacky decoration section at Wal-mart, picking out the perfect heart to shoot the shit out of.

You mean length-wise, or deadline-wise? The latest challenges went on for several months because they covered the summer and winter hiatus respectively - I don't actually know whether they're planning something for the upcoming mini-hiatus. Length-wise, there has never been a limit so far.

One of these days, I swear I'll actually learn how to spell "length"...

I meant length-wise (and yes, you spelled it right--hee). I've never really checked it out. I thought they called it "bitesize" because it was for short fics. Why is it bitesize if there's no limit?

Well, I spelled it right in the edited version ;-))

I think it's called bitesize because most of the fics written for it are rather short, but you can go longer if you want to. The maintainers post a specific challenge at some point (usually at the beginning of a hiatus), for which everyone can post prompts, and then everyone can write ficlets for these prompts.

Alternatively, I guess one could simply post a comment fic challenge over at bones_ga - I've never done one for this fandom, but in my old fandom, some people would host such challenges on a regular basis, and they were a lot of fun.

Just so you know, I've started writing this plotbunny now, and it's all your fault. Hee. It's not turning out that cracky though, but it is a fun diversion from the so-far-angsty & most-likely-to-be-super-long Brennan-centric one I've been working on already.
