rachg82: (scully going to oregon)
[personal profile] rachg82
Let's start with a meme I snatched today from [livejournal.com profile] alias_jems:

List ten things that you love that begin with that letter and then post that list on your journal.

Last time I did this, I got the letter B. This time, I got R.

1.

Rap music - Along with flannel-ridden alternative rock (I am a Pacific NW native after all), it's what I grew up with. If you catch me in the right mood, or pay me enough, I might even do some impromptu karoake for you. ~ROCK IT, DON'T STOP IT.~. *breaks into the robot* Haha. Um, yeah, let's not.

2.
(psst: if you know who created this, please let me know so I can credit!)

Roslin - I'd probably write an essay if I tried explaining all the reasons why I like her--her strengths, her flaws, her quirks--so I'll make this easy & just share one of my favorite Laura-centric vids (by pennyfeline):

…must. hold. in. tears. Gah.

3.

Rose Festival - As in the Portland Rose Festival. I love carnivals and have a particular sentimental fondness for the entire festival because of that, despite the ridiculous priceyness of its cheesy rides. I'm not crazy for the parades, really, but the whole thing just makes me smile. I like seeing the Navy ships docking, like the tradition, and like how it ushers in summer for the city.

4.

Rizzoli & Isles - Okay, so that pic is of the actresses, but still. CUTE. IT'S WHAT THEY ARE. ALL DAY.

Seriously though, I pretty much adore this show. It took me a couple episodes to really get into it, but once that happened, I was all in. Shipping it like a maniac, hunting down fic, making icons, you get the idea. Hearts in my eyes, as [livejournal.com profile] torigates would say.

5.

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups - They're tied with Kit Kats as my favorite run-of-the-mill American candy bar. I've mostly switched to Almond Butter, because of the soy & corn you typically find in peanut butter-based products, but you can pry peanut butter chocolate from my cold dead hands.

Also: God bless YouTube for all the retro commercials. So much fun.

6.

River Tam - Why do I love her? Because she can kill you with her brain, that's why. Also the reasons I already explained in my voice post, here.

7.
(that's me on the left)

Rivers - Plural, this time. I can't imagine not living near water, whether it be a river, the ocean, a lake, something. As it is, I'm approximately one hour or less from the coast, within walking distance of the Tualatin river, a short drive from both the Willamette & the Columbia, and not terribly far from the deepest lake in the United States (Crater Lake). The fact that I didn't learn to swim until I was nine is…yeah. Another matter. Heh.

8. Researching - I like learning new things, looking stuff up, and diving headfirst into a topic. Believe it or not, I always got excited over doing reports when I was in school.

9. Run-on jokes - The whole concept of "don't beat a dead horse" is kinda lost on me, ngl. I'm the type to kill the horse, resurrect it, then kill it again. Figuratively speaking, of course. Hee. (Poor horse)

10. Reading - Since I already talked about my love of books last time though, I'll be more specific this time & narrow it down to fanfic. I've been reading fanfic since I was 14/15 years old (allll the way back in 1997). I still think of those days as sorta the Golden Age of fandom, simply because as an X-Phile they set the bar for me. I remember at one point the Gossamer Archive was getting something like 60,000 hits a day. It was just crazycakes. I don't read nearly as much new fic now, regardless of fandom, but it's still something that I dearly love. Beginning to write it myself has been an extension of that.

Wow, that took forever. Heh. If any of you would like a letter, holla at me.

And now for some randomness:

-I may not get the SNAP assistance money until October 18th. That's cool; I didn't want to eat anyway. *hates life*

In all seriousness, it's possible I'll get it before then--I've been hounding my caseworker, & she said she'd try to work on it today, but "can't guarantee" that--and I do have a little bit left in my checking account (under $40, I think), but I'd probably need to visit a food pantry too or something if not.

-Rent is late after today, and I still don't have an answer from unemployment. I need to go talk to my apartment manager about it again, though I don't know what to tell her in terms of when I can actually pay. My stress is to a point where it's almost like a body in shock -- it doesn't even seem real. I still feel almost completely paralyzed by it.

-I called & left a voicemail on my dad's cell on Sunday (they never gave me their new house # after moving this summer), asking him to pass along a Happy Birthday message to my brother & let him know he can call me back any time, that I'd love to talk to him. Have I heard back? Of course not. Not from my brother & not from my dad.

-No one probably cares, but it's my current re-discovered obsession, so just go with it: I finished the Donkey Kong Country series a while back, getting a 101% score on the first game, a 102% score on the second, and both a 103 & 105% score on the third (the latter requires a code getting rid of all halfway barrels, making the levels more difficult. I played it twice, once the normal way & once with the cheat). Now, I'm going through the old-school NES Mario games. I already beat the third one (plus Super Mario World) & am now moving backwards to the second. I played all these games like a fiend as a kid, but I don't remember if I actually ever beat the first two. I was pretty little then (I got my first NES at five years old -- my sister, stepbrother, and I all combined our Christmas money together to buy it), so my memories of those first couple games aren't as clear. Replaying the second one now is kind of a trip, really. It's definitely the weirdest & most random of the bunch.

-I've discovered a new TV love: Dark Matters. It's on the Science channel & is full of awesomeness. Like, they're all, "Don't you want to hear about the dude who stole Einstein's brain & then stuck it in his wife's mayo jar next to the pickles?" And I'm like, "UM, YEAH. HOW DID YOU KNOW."

-Since it's October, I'm already watching a ton of shit that will probably give me nightmares for years. A+, self. Seriously though, Paranormal Witness? *shudders* The whole first half of this episode (legit already dreamt about it last night) and also this one? Ahhh. AHHH.

I think that's it for now. I'm not gonna do a Vid of the Day this time because I already did some YouTubeing in this post, and I'm feeling lazy.

I have an amazing (and simple!) recipe for Reese's peanut butter cup cookies that I used to love making. I'm thinking sometime soon I'll try a GF version, though whether I still use the peanut butter cups in that case (or some almond butter/chocolate mixture of my own) is yet to be determined.

After all these years, Donkey Kong is still my favorite.

I hope the unemployment issues work themselves out fast. Do you have any idea when you might expect an answer? Is there any way I could help you, even if just a little bit?

OMG old NES games!!! Where did you find them? Do you play them on your regular computer? I'd love love love to have another go at the Mario games. I remember really hating the second one when I just got it, because it was just so... weird. But after a while I started enjoying playing the princess. She could jump far because her dress worked like a parachute or something. Idek what the programmers where on when they crafted it.

I only know it should be within the next couple weeks, based on the 3-4 week ETA I was originally given. I thought it'd be resolved pretty quickly after I got that phone call, but I guess not. I don't know whether that's a good or bad sign.

Is there any way I could help you, even if just a little bit?

Any help would be appreciated beyond measure. Honestly, it was suggested to me that I ask online friends for help, but I haven't gotten up the nerve/desperation yet to do so. If people offer of their own volition, however, I have no qualms accepting whatever they feel comfortable/able doing. I could even set up a PayPal account to accept funds from out of the country. Every little bit would count, but again, I'd never *expect* friends to help me. You know? And I wouldn't want to make anyone feel guilty if they didn't.

OMG old NES games!!! Where did you find them?

Actually, I still have them from childhood. My dad has my original NES, and all the games that went with it (Duckhunt! Dr. Mario!), but I have my Super Nintendo (and Playstation, for that matter, even my gameboy!), including Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3 on this game (http://www.lukiegames.com/Super-Mario-All-Stars-Super-Nintendo-SNES.html), which combined all three NES games on one SNES cartridge. The graphics were updated for the new system, but the games are the same.

That being said, I know you can find those games online & play them with your computer using an emulator. I haven't tried this site (http://emulator-zone.com/) out myself, so I don't know how good or safe it is, but it looks like a pretty big archive. I only wish it had Atari games; I still miss mine!

Oh, and YES, re: the princess' dress. I almost always play with either her or the mushroom dude. Which…yeah, I'm pretty sure I know where the programmers got their inspiration for him from.

Set it up. I'd be very happy to help you. I could just as well spend the money sending you chocolate, but I realize that the cash would be so much more helpful atm. And the euro-dollar conversion rates are most favourable ;-).

I still have all my old games too, but my trusted old NES died. I was really sad for a few days when I realized I'd never play those games again. Gonna check out that site! I still have an old Atari at home (from 1982!) as well and a few years ago, it worked for like half an hour. A glorious half hour of Space Invaders and Pac Man.
