rachg82: (Adama/Roslin arm in arm)
[personal profile] rachg82
Couple bits of randomness for you all today:

1. So far there are only six people who say they're down for participating in the Shipper Showdown this weekend. [nag voice]Now, come on people, are you really gonna let down your ships like that? Don't you owe Mulder/Scully, Adama/Roslin, Booth/Brennan, (insert millions of other ships here), etc, a few minutes of your time? THAT'S RIGHT, I THOUGHT SO.[/nag voice] Hee, okay, I'm done with the fake guilt-trip now. But seriously, if you'll be able to at least drop by to vote & leave even one campaign-y comment, that's cool too. Let me know if so. I just want to gauge whether it's still worth doing, or if I should plan it for another day entirely because not enough people will be able to show. 'Cause really, I want a ~crazy shipper smackdown~ up in here, yo. And so do you. C'mon, you know you do. All the cool kids are doin' it.[/peer pressure]

(But if people really can't do it, or not a huge amount of people are interested, that's okay too. Hee. I'll still do it anyway for the people who are into it. But guilt-tripping is fun! Plus, it burns calories)

2. Here's a sign that it's time to go shopping: you have to roll over the waistband of your jeans to keep them from falling off. Damn. I mean, I know I've lost weight and all (must be all that guilt-tripping, hee), but still. It's a good thing my sis and I are hitting The Gap tomorrow night.

3. Have I mentioned lately how entertaining my coworkers are? Because seriously. Here's just one example of a conversation we had today:

Coworker 1: Why won't you go to trivia with me tonight?
Me: He's got LOST, dude.
Coworker 2: Hell YEAH.
Coworker 1: JUST RECORD IT.
Coworker 2: ANY TRUE FAN WATCHES IT LIVE.
Coworker 1: You can just leave at 8:40! *knowing he'll refuse*
Coworker 2: Hello, commute! I have to get home & get ready!
Me: He's gotta get in his costume, yo. His LOST outfit.
Coworker 2: And I have to make dinner! It's my night!
Me: What will you have for your LOST-y meal this time?
Coworker 2: I don't know yet!
Coworker 3: What is LOST about, anyway? Isn't it, like, an island? And people are lost on it or something?
Everyone: *laughs at her*
Me: IT'S A ~MAGIC ISLAND~. With polar bears. And smoke-monsters. And time travel.
Coworker 1: Polar bears? TIME TRAVEL? Really? Really? *looks at him judgmentally*
Coworker 2: Uhhh, yeah. HEY, WE ALREADY FIGURED OUT THE SMOKE-MONSTER A MILLION YEARS AGO. WATCH & YOU'D KNOW THIS.
Everyone: *laughs at him*
Coworker 2: YOU GUYS DON'T EVEN KNOW. Plus, the polar bears are gone now.

Hahaha. I LOVE SCREWING WITH HIM ABOUT LOST. It's the bestest best thing ever. (P.S. To the LOST fans on my flist, ILU. Hee.)

4. On a much more serious note (I warned you this post would be random), I found out my grandma has breast cancer tonight. MAN, LIFE, WAY TO DISH 'EM OUT. God damn. But on the bright side, she says they caught it really early and doubts she'll even need chemo. She's supposed to go in for surgery in the next two weeks, and then it's possible she'll need radiation but doesn't even know for sure yet. But the important thing is, she told me she should be okay. She was more bothered by it hurting right now, and how annoying the testing was (apparently she had to basically lie upside-down for like an hour while they did a needle-biopsy & mri. Good times! She was like, "I'd rather have surgery." Heh).

, because I wanted to make sure she knew I was okay, and that I had her support. Mom had been feeding her bullshit about the prozac I'm taking (ugh), and I knew Nanny had been saying she didn't think Joe meant what he said, but after we talked for a minute she said she understood where I was coming from & agreed I was doing the right thing. I honestly think it's just been hard for her to accept what he did because she hasn't seen some of the things I've seen in the past (except I do think it made a lightbulb go off for her when I asked her, "Nanny, when Mom went into rehab when I was eleven, why did I come & live with you? Why didn't I stay with Joe?" and she was like "We would never have let you stay with your stepdad who had been convicted of, well, you know" and I was like, "HELLO, NANNY, POINT EXACTLY. We're talking about the same guy now you know, WTF"), and also because she's terrified of my mom living on her own & leaving Joe. If she doesn't have to believe Joe is being a pervert (or at least that he *is* a pervert but that he wouldn't actually physically try anything and so that could somehow make it okay for us to still deal with seeing him), then she doesn't have to believe Mom should leave him or upset the status quo. You know what I mean?

But all that matters to me is that she respects my decision and isn't over there thinking, "Man, what's wrong with Rachael? Has she lost her mind or something?" She assured me that's not what she's been thinking at all and that she agreed she wouldn't want to see Joe either. She did try to say though that she wouldn't be "hurt" by it that much, or at least wouldn't let it hurt her, which is just like: c'mon, really? I should just be all, "no big deal, doesn't hurt me at all what he's done, or how this has tainted every memory I have of him, prevented me from ever feeling comfortable seeing him again, and turned my family upside-down! No worries!" But that didn't surprise me, because my grandma has emotions of steel and apologized to me for crying on the day my grandpa died for pete's sake. That's just the way she is, and I know she didn't mean anything by it & was just trying to help in her own way. She doesn't want me to be hurt; she wants me to be strong.

But she's not trying to talk to me about "Satan" and all the other bullshit my mom is trying to throw at me, so we're cool. Plus despite the fact that she's still more in denial about my mom than I am (it's easier for her to deal with my mom if she makes up excuses for her problems like "she was hit in the head as a child" or "we shouldn't have put her on that anti-depressant at 13 because they weren't good back then", etc), she did agree with what I had to say about her and how people needed to put their foot down or else she'd never even try to change. I pointed out how my uncle's gone to AA meetings for 25 years, and was like, "When has Mom ever treated her recovery so seriously?" And she was like, "you're right." So, yeah. She gets it, and basically told me she thinks it's time I got to live my own life and get away from other people's drama for a while, and that even if Mom never gets her act together & we stopped talking permanently, she'd still understand it. She then told me she was proud of me and how I've lived my life, which was nice. So at least everything is okay between us, which is really important to me.

Lastly, she also agreed I should go to Al-Anon, which reminds me that I really need to look up stuff for that. I hope there's a place I can go to for it nearby that would be accessible by bus, since I'm not sure my sister's ready for it yet (she has a car). She's said she's interested in it in the past, but everytime I bring it up right now, she gets that "yeaahhhh, we'll see" tone. Something's holding her back, but I'm not sure what it is. She gets the same dodgy/procrastinating tone when she talks about seeing a counselor. I figure she just needs to get to the point where she feels comfortable doing that kind of stuff at her own pace, so I won't push her. I'll just go myself, and then maybe if she sees that it helps me, it'll make her feel like going too. We'll see.

5. Meme time! I'm swiping this one from [livejournal.com profile] softly_me, because it was too much fun to pass up:

- Choose a random quote from each one of your favorite ships.
- Your friends now must guess the ship that each quote refers to. NO GOOGLING. Cheat if it's REALLY that important to you.
- Edit to add the answer when someone gets it right.
- Tag 5 people. Do it if you'd like.

Like [livejournal.com profile] softly_me, I'm not going to limit this to my favorite ships only. If I did, there'd only be five or six, and it'd be too easy for people to guess all of them. Instead, I'm posting quotes from both my favorite ships & also ships I just like (and even one in particular I know a few of you are going to stone me to death for including, ha. Plus another that went to a majorly dysfunctional place plot-wise, but whom I couldn't resist including because of how entertaining I found them to be leading up to that point. I could've even added more to the list too, but I didn't feel like taking all night to think of quotes, heh).

P.S. I realize that at least a couple of these are gonna get guessed within 1.5 seconds because the quotes are so easy, but I couldn't resist using them because I love the quotes so much. Heh. I threw in some harder-to-get ones to make up for it though!

But anyway, enough blathering: on with the ships!

That's right, Poopyhead.

Mystery Ship #2:

I'm working! What are you doing? Besides being. . .

Being what?

Wait a minute. . .

Sarcastic? Unfeeling? British?

It's an animal.

Where?

No, the word!

Still, you have to admit, I am. . .very British. I don't say hard R's.

You know what I like? Brown sauce. What's it made of? Science doesn't know!

It's made of brown.

Brown. Mined from the Earth by hardscrabble brown miners of North Brownderton.

Oh, my God. I find lentils completely incomprensible. What the sun-dappled hell is [name] doing at Fremont?

That's got nothing to do with the drug, which means our problems are huge & indomitable.

Ooh, I could eat that word. Or a crisp. Do you have any crisps?

You haven't seen my drawer of inappropriate starches? C'mon, c'mon, c'mon!

No, no, no.

You have to fight. You don't have to talk, just concentrate on fighting. Just hold on.

I'm not scared. I'm not scared. I'm not scared. Please, [name], why can't I stay?

So, the crux of this plan is. . .

Sexual intercourse. I've said it, like, a dozen times.

Uh-huh. Just working through a little hysterical deafness here.

I think we need to take the second step.

Yeah, okay. We need to counteract it.

Mm-hmm.

We need, like, rules of un-attraction.

Okay, like never be alone together. . .

Right! Never be alone together.

Especially never be alone together in places where there's like a bed or a couch.

Right, or-or-a table. Or a floor. Or the backseat of a car.

Ooh, that'd be good. . .That *wouldn't* be good!

Okay! I recognized
Adama/Roslin
Lee/Kara
Six/Baltar
Lorelai/Chris
Mulder/Scully (I think?)
Adelle/Topher
Adelle/Dominic

I figure there must be a Lorelai/Luke somewhere too, as well as lots of Buffy, but I'm failing at recognizing them *bad shipper*.

#7 Anya/Xander

#12 Angela Chase/Jordan Catalano Brian Krakow
#15 Buffy/Spike
#17 Booth/Bones
#18 Willow/Tara
#22 Blair/Serena

And I know I recognize almost all the rest, but I can't put my finger on 'em.

Here's the only one you got wrong: #12 (here's a hint: right show, wrong pairing.) :-)

And yay, I'm glad you'll be there! I'm sure it'll be fun, even if it's a small group.

P.S. I love how your answers for My So-Called Life had the full names. Ha. That's so perfect for that show. It almost feels unnatural to say "Jordan" without following it up with the "Catalano"

Hmm, #12, is Angela/Rayanne? I can hear the line. (But I thought she was repeating it from the letter. Apparently I need to break out my DVDs!) And those two I am capable of writing out in just first name, but it is physically impossible not to say Jordan Catalano.

It was in the pilot. Rayanne said it to Angela in the cop car at the end of the episode after Angela told her & Rickie that she'd want someone to say that to her before having sex. I always loved their relationship friendship more than the one Angela had with anyone else, trufax.

I'll just point to my icon for number 3. I really don't think I'd have an issue recognising something they said.

Number 10 is that painful greasy haired one with the tall blonde one.

And number 6 sounds like the Tool and Kara in Daybreak but I'm not completely sure. I think I was too busy checking out Zak (there's something about that guy that is very very attractive).

And that's it. Because BSG dominated my life.

Yep, you got 'em! And yeah, that A/R quote was especially easy, heh. But one of my favorite things about them is the way they share books with each other, so I couldn't resist. I also knew I was bound to get some flak for the Lee/Kara, ha. He IS a tool, but sometimes I couldn't help liking their scenes. *is ashamed* (and the ep was "Scar," in case you really wanted to know. . .which I'm sure you didn't. Ha)

P.S. BSG dominates my life too, so we're in the same boat!

Thanks. Thank God it sounds like they caught it early. I think if it had been a Roslin situation, I might've just fallen the hell apart. I know my grandma's in her eighties and all, but I'm still convinced she's going to outlive us all.

3. You are correct! I can't imagine any of my A/R peeps wouldn't get this one though. Heh. You're also correct on #6 and #10.

But on 4 you are totally wrong. Hee. That one's Luke/Lorelai (I can tell you because someone else already guessed it). #1 was Mulder/Scully. :-) But I can see why you thought that, with the "it took us a million years to get together" similarity. Wow, I am rubbish at this! I could only name two for certain (Mulder/Scully and Willow/Tara) but I recognised so many more in that really frustrating "I know I've heard this, but where?" type way.

Then I saw the answers and was all "Ooooh, so obvious."

Heh, that's okay! I'll post the answers no one gets in my next entry so people don't have to go crazy. :-)

(1) Sorry about your grandmother, dear. (2) Your LOST-loving coworker sounds awesome =D (3) Hmm, not many shippy quotes left.

11. Buffy/Faith!
16. Alice/Dana (They're definitely my OTP for that show)
20. Illyria/Wesley, FTW!

Btw, I totally approve of Christopher/Lorelai shipping. I mean, Luke/Lorelai is trufax, but I can't help but really attach to C/L. They have the best scenes together.

Just for my curiosity, which is the dysfunctional plot-wise ship?

I am seriously so impressed by you guys! There's only 3 left that no one's guessed.

Dude, Alice & Dana were the shiz until that post-breakup phase where Alice went all nutty & Dana was being all bitchy. But then of course I loved them again when Dana got sick. *sniff* And Illyria/Wesley were so great that I was able to deal with my gutwrenching grief over Fred's death, so that's a pretty big accomplishment. LOVED Illyria, man. And Buffy/Faith? Please, I think we all know how I feel about them. Heh. *flails*

And dude! I can't believe I finally found someone else who didn't hate C/L! I mean, like I said above, I KNOW Chris is a douche, and I get why people hate him. He bugged me too sometimes. But I couldn't help but like him too, and like his scenes with Lorelai. I really didn't mind the two of them getting together in season 7. My only complaint was that there wasn't more scenes between her & Luke, as I knew all along I wanted them to get back together by the end. But I enjoyed seeing Chris & Lorelai be together for a while in the meantime.

The dysfunctional ship is Buffy/Spike. I loved their sexual tension & hate/attraction banter so much throughout the first 4 seasons, and then thought his crush on her in season 5 was hilarious. And of course when they finally got it on in "Smashed", that shit was HOT. I mean, I watched that scene quite a few times. Ha. But the relationship after that point had so much baggage & fucked-upness to it that I can't help feeling the need to post a disclaimer with any kind of support for them. Like, "I like them, but not in an OTP way! Almost raping someone? Even if you don't have a soul? Not really going to be my OTP, sorry. Plus Angel & Faith are her OTP anyway. Sorry, Spike."

Ugh, so I typed out this whole reply to you yesterday and then my internet crashed. But, because I had pretty much finished the comment, I sort of assumed I posted it and then forgot. Fail.

Anyway, I totally get the Dana/Alice deterioration, but it is The L World. We don't exactly watch it for strong characterization and seamless storylines. I never did ship Fred/Wes, so shipping Illyria/Wes came quite naturally to me and I kind of ran with it. And, of course, Buffy/Faith is so close to my heart.

We must be the only two C/L people on the entire internet! I'll admit that I really liked this ship in the early years. There was a even a time when I didn't know who I wanted Lorelai to end up with - Christopher or Luke. In fourth season, Luke ended up winning out because of awkward flirting and the most perfect first kiss ever, but I always had a lot of affection for Christopher. He didn't really become a jerk until the later seasons and I, personally, consider everything after fifth season to be painfully bad and out of character for everyone involved. Chris was never cared about money. So, it kind of annoyed me that they tried to make him into a rich jerk.

Yeah, if there was one word to describe S6 Buffy/Spike it would be dysfunctional. Although, the attempted rape never stopped me from shipping Buffy with Soul!Spike in S7. After all, I ship Buffy/Angel like mad and I don't think Angelus would have any reservations about raping her. (I sorta ship Buffy with everyone, but her and Xander are my OTP.)

Ha, true story.

I didn't ship Fred/Wes too hard myself until season 5, and then I couldn't resist them after their cute drunkyness at the halloween party and then their sad ending. I think it's the epicness of her death that took them to a different level for me. And Illyria/Wes had a fascinating darkness to it. I loved Illyria's combination of strength & vulnerability, and how she & Wesley related to each other with Fred's ghost constantly between them. And this is making me really want to rewatch that season, just for the record. Heh.

SERIOUSLY. Except for a few people on youtube. Everyone else hates him with a passion, and ripped out their hair over Lorelai being with him in s7. I hated how her breakup with Luke was handled, but I always liked her scenes with Christopher, including the ones in s7. Even though the writing in general that season was weak (compared to how great it was in the first 5 years, I mean), and Lorelai didn't seem as much like her happy self, which made me sad for her. I can totally buy Chris' money going to his head though. I think suddenly coming into a huge amount of it could change a lot of people. I still liked him even then though. But for me, his douchebaggery had always been present at the same time; it was just that I liked him despite it. In the first few seasons, I'd say his jerkyness would've related to how small a role he played in Rory's life & his general flakyness. He really hadn't grown up yet at that point imo.

You make a good point about Spike and Angel. I guess for me it tainted their relationship after that because I had a hard time imagining Buffy fully getting past the memory of it. It was such a violent & painful scene to watch. But like you I did find a way to still enjoy Soul!Spike after that, and how he & Buffy interacted in season 7. For me, they're one of those complicated ships where I like the attraction the two people share, and what they mean to each other, but wouldn't want to see them skip off into the sunset happily ever after. Kind of Christopher & Lorelai actually, except minus the attempted rape & vampire thing. Hee. But the sentiment is the same.

aw, i'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. It's good that they seem to have caught it in time, but I know it's still scary. :(

Thank you. And yeah, definitely still scary. All four of my grandparents have now had cancer, and two of them died from it (the third died of a heart attack). She's the only one I have left, and I don't want to see her have to deal with that. It's such a horrible way to go.
