1. The job is a go, people. I'mma make it rain! (In Portland! Which neverrr happens otherwise. Y'know. Heh.)
All right, so in reality I won't really be making that much--I made more at Xerox--but there are three important things to balance it out: 1. If I want to, and if I can manage to avoid being lazy more often than not, I can walk to & from work & avoid/lower transportation costs (it's 1.2 miles each way. At the least, I imagine I'll walk home often, even if I can't muster up the energy in the morning); 2. This job completely covers benefits. I mean, like any other plan in this country, there's co-pays & what-not when you visit a doctor, but there won't be any funds taken out of my paycheck. That is SO rare these days; and 3. I'll make more than I'm getting on unemployment, unlike that temp data entry position I passed on a few months ago.
Also: it's a permanent full-time position, so after I've been there a while I'll have paid vacations. Imagine that. (SO sick of full-time contract jobs where you do the same work as permanent employees & get none of the perks, I swear)
I have orientation on Tuesday, and my first official day is next Friday, after which I'll be in training for six weeks. They have a "three strikes & you're out" policy regarding tardyness or absence in the first 90 days, so I'll have to really stay on myself to keep healthy, physically & emotionally. I feel a little nervous about that, but hopeful as well because of the dietary changes & the fact that I have distance from chaos-causing family members now.
Obviously, call-center work isn't ideal (already cringing over the "we expect eight calls per hour" stats type stuff), but it helps that I'm VERY tired of being unemployed & have had such a long break since doing phone work. From what I saw of the place when I went inside, too, it seemed pretty chill. The lights weren't super bright & harsh like some places I've worked, it was reasonably quiet both times (surprisingly), and everyone has their own cubicle with high walls. At least in the areas I went, anyway.
As for my schedule, it'll be Fri, Sat, Sun, & Mon. Fridays & Mondays will be 7:35 am - 6:05 pm, and Saturdays & Sundays will be 6:35 am - 5:05 pm. I've done four 10s before, and I know how tiring they can be, but considering I was watching my nephew then all day long on one of my three days off every week (sometimes more), and often did overtime, I was stretched a bit thin overall. My days off this time will be consecutive, as well, which I like. It'll interfere with my usual Saturday (sometimes Monday) ACA meetings, but they take place on Wednesdays & Thursdays too, so that's not a huge deal. And a lot of PCC classes take place Tues-Thurs, so once I feel ready I could easily fit in a class or two on those days if I wanted.
So, yes, this is of the good. I'm already planning on buying a celebratory copy of season 2 of Community when it comes out in September (worth buying for Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas, alone, seriously). I want to get my hair done, too. But that'll have to wait a bit since I go to a pricey place & have infinite amounts of hair (it's deceivingly thick). Right now I'm still mainly focused on making sure I don't go over budget buying & trying out new foods, factoring in my higher rent starting next month, catching up on bills, and all that. But once things get more settled, I'm totes splurging.
ETA: Ooh! And I almost forgot, the job includes free cell phone service (not sure if they literally give you a phone, too, or if you pay for that. We'll see). Kind of hilarious because, really? A free cell phone was probably the only possible way to make me willingly own one.[/curmudgeon]
2. Speaking of money, buying a blender is probably one of the best things I've ever done. SO MUCH FUN. Even when I was a kid, we didn't have one; my best friend & I would hand-stir milkshakes, haha. We thought we were brilliant at it though, like we were gonna go out & have a milkshake stand & get filthy rich or something.
3. I put season 3 of Friday Night Lights on request at the library yesterday, so I should be getting that soon (it needs to be moved from another location). Fingers crossed it arrives today. I need some Eric & Tami Taylor in my life.
4. Current has been airing some of the docs from that "50 Documentaries to See Before You Die" series I mentioned the other day, and yesterday they played "One Day in September" (about the 1972 Munich games/attack), which I'd never seen before. I have to say I agree with its placement on the list. Tense, disturbing, & frankly heartbreaking (the Philip Glass music doesn't help, heh. My tear ducts have like a pavlovian response to him). The whole thing is up on YouTube, too (Part One), in case anyone wants to watch. Here's the trailer as well.<--I know, I'm so helpful.
5. My sleep schedule is getting closer to normal--I'm going to bed in the evening, not the morning--but I keep waking up way too early. Like, 2 or 3 in the morning, completely opposite to my normal problem of konking out for 10-16 hours at a time. Cut it out, body!
And that's it. For my Vid of the Day, here's some random funnyness:

Date: 2011-08-19 01:28 pm (UTC)YAY, that is awesome! 10-hour days sounds hardcore, but it is nice that you will have three days off during the week to do errands and doctor appointments and whatev.
Ooh, maybe I should get a blender. *ponder*
