Ugh, I feel like crappity crap. The cold I've been fighting to resist all week finally took hold today. I do not appreciate this, immune system!
I was going to go shopping today too, man. Stupid swine flu (which I've decided to blame it on, because it sounds more exciting, hee) *grumbles* Oh well, I'll just go shopping next weekend or something. I did get to at least see my sister & nephew/niece briefly though. They came over so I could give my sister a check to pay for a coupon book for his school. And Isabella wandered around my apartment, getting into everything & moving my remotes into mysterious places. Hee. She kept letting out these long rambles of baby gibberish at the things in my apartment too. I think she was having a conversation with my food pantry, no lie. Haha. Also? She understands the word "no" now, and cries when she hears it. Kid learns fast!
Oh, and to add to your daily dose of cute, I give you this moment with Jayden:
Me: Jay, how are you feeling? I heard you had a fever yesterday. Are you all better?
Jayden: Yeah
Me: Aw, I'm sorry you weren't feeling good, though
Jayden: *shrugs* It was just a fever. They don't do anything to you. You just sit around and drink Gatorade.
Hee. I love hearing kids' perspectives on things. You just drink Gatorade! Like, no big.
Anyway, I was going to do another BSG post tonight, but my brain sort of stopped working around halfway through this entry, so I set it aside to come back to later. In the meantime, here's the rest of what I wrote, which includes some quick reactions to other misc. shows (Glee, So You Think You Can Dance, etc) and a work-related tidbit.
1. Work-related stuff. Nothing super exciting to talk about here, but I felt the need to mention that I heard they're trying to find ways to switch us contract employees to be direct temps of the company (we still wouldn't be permanent in that case obviously, but it would at least put us on a real path to permanent employment once the hiring freeze is lifted, and would allow people to stay longer in the meantime). From what I've been told though, it's only something they're trying to do right now for the people whose contracts are coming to an end, because it's already a struggle enough to get it done for a few people, let alone the whole group. I assume they'll probably do the same for the few people like me whose contracts will be up later, or at least I hope they will.
I really hope they succeed, because otherwise it's going to be a total disaster (we'd be losing most of the group within a month or two of each other). We've got this super cohesive group that for the most part knows what they're doing, and is good at their jobs. Not to mention we all get along really well. The people I sit near are so entertaining, seriously. I spend so much of my day laughing. I would be so bummed to lose those people, because it makes such a difference how you feel about your job when you like your coworkers. So, fingers crossed it all works out.
Also, as an added note: I really do hope they have intentions to do this for the rest of us as well, whose contracts don't end til later. I don't want to work in this same department forever, but it's a great stepping stone to other jobs there once the economy improves, and I'd hate to work there so long and never get permanent employment. I know it wouldn't be a waste, because I've gained experience & references and all that jazz, but it would still be really disheartening. I'd like to feel like they appreciate what we do, and don't see us as merely disaposable temps. I think they do appreciate us though, based on how they act. But it's good to see an obvious sign of that.
2. Misc. tv-stuff. Because I like lists, that's how we're going to cover these bad boys.
-Mad Men. Still really liking this show. I'm interested to see where they take things with the new baby. I'm sensing post-partum on the horizon in a major way. What do you guys think? I need to catch up on the older eps, though. I'm sure this show is on DVD, right?
eta: Okay, a new episode of Mad Men just came on as I was finishing this, and dude, it's that British intern from Bones! They also had the actress who played Daisy recently. How weird. It's like a Bones invasion! Heh.
-Glee. I thought the last two eps weren't as good as the first, but I still enjoyed them. The pamphlets in the counselor's office cracked me up. My favorite? "My mother is bipolar and she won't stop yelling!" Haha. Where was this pamplet when I was a teenager?! Like, honestly. Also loved the early '90s music in the last ep. My sister & I TOTALLY used to make up dances to "Poison," no lie. Hee.
-America's Next Top Model. Three words for you: Fortress of Fierceness. Also? Smize! Hahaha. TYRA BANKS YOU ARE A FUCKING NUTJOB, PLEASE NEVER CHANGE. I'm kinda disapointed the models aren't shorter though, as you know this is the season for "petite" models. I'm like, hello, 5'7 is not petite. Try 4'10, bitches. Stupid modeling industry.
-So You Think You Can Dance. Not a lot to say so far as we're still just in the audition phase. But I love when Cat Deeley starts dancing with the people in the lines, hee. She is so adorable. Also thought Nigel handed the same-sex pair WAY better this time. He pissed me off so bad last year, oh my God. And I know he got his ass reamed by people for his comments. So I think he's learned his lesson. You can tell he was still uncomfortable, but he wasn't a rude jackass this time. I could tell he was at least making an effort. And I don't care what he says to the press, he IS homophobic, he's just probably one of those people who doesn't want to be, or at least doesn't want to think of himself that way. Prejudice isn't always a conscious, malicious thing after all. But at least now he's learned to be aware of the types of comments he makes, hopefully. I think it helped greatly too that this time the pairing was really good. Last year's couple sucked, and looked ridiculous. This year the couple completely knew what they were doing, and I thought they were wonderful. I did kind of hate how Nigel sort of cut the guy off though, when he tried to mention how meaningful it was for young queer people to express themselves. He was all "um, that's great, MOVING ON NOW." But whatever. One step at a time.
Also? I was so thrilled they made it to Vegas. I will be ecstactic if an out performer makes it to the top 20. It is fucking absurd that there haven't been any so far on this show, considering how many of them were gay. They always wait until after the season ends to let it slip on MySpace or something. And I mean, I get it. I do. So much of the dancing on the show is heavily hetero, and I think they're scared the viewers won't see chemistry between the dancers if they know one of them is gay. But come on, can't we give the fans more credit than that? It's called acting, people. Does anyone really think all the straight dancers on the show are into each other during their performances? Please. And I'm not asking the dancers to be all majorly forthcoming about their personal lives on the show; I just think they shouldn't have to hide who they are.
As an aside: I loved Mia and Mary getting all goofy in Phoenix, hee. That amused me. (P.S. Time for an unpopular fandom confession: I like Mary Murphy. Her screams are annoying, I know. But I admit I find her kind of endearing and funny. She sincerely loves dance, you can tell. And I've seen a clip of her performing ballroom back in the day, and she was really, really good. So she does actually know what she's talking about. Plus she choreographed my favorite Paso Doble the show ever had, between Travis and Heidi back in season 2. She just needs to learn to dial the screams down is all. Although I have to admit, there was this one time she stood up and started doing this choo-choo hot tamale train move with her arms and all the other judges joined in, and I seriously couldn't stop laughing over that for like a minute straight after I saw it. Haha. So I sometimes enjoy her insanity)
That's pretty much it for tonight. Yes, I know, it's a short one for me. Heh. But like I said, I was all geared up to do a massive BSG picspammy recap, and my brain went "um, no, nice try." So, it's going to have to wait. For now, I'll leave you with these two vids for the day, because I'm in the mood to cheat & don't feel like picking just one. There's a reason I picked each one though, so I feel like that excuses my cheating. Heh.
First up, remember my homage to Bear McCreary yesterday? Well, after all that I couldn't resist posting this vid here. It's a clip from one of the special features on the 4th season DVDs, and it made me seriously crack up when I first saw it. It's basically a giant parody about the cast pretending to have never heard of him (and making fun of his name, hee), and also James Callis (who plays Baltar) composing his own song for the show. Favorite lyric of said song? "HE'S A MOTHERFUCKING SHIT!" Hahaha. JAMES CALLIS, I LOVE YOU.
Secondly, I give you this sneak-peek at the next BSG episode I'll be recapping, "The Oath." It's the first of a two-parter (followed by "Blood on the Scales") and together they form two of the most kick-ass episodes of the entire 4th season (imo at least). This vid (by AAGarbman) focuses on just the first of the two, which brings you the following things:
-Roslin in Adama's robe (plus, hello! dramatic kissing!)
-A good ole fashioned mutiny
-Everyone grabbing guns and shooting the shit out of everything
WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR IN AN EPISODE, HONESTLY?
(and heads up: it only continues its awesomeness in the second half. I'm not sure if I've ever seen anything quite so fucking HBIC as Roslin and her badass "I AM COMING FOR ALL OF YOU" moment on the basestar. SHE WILL END YOU WITH HER EYETEETH, ladies & gents. And I don't even know what those are, but I know to be afraid of her using them on me. Haha.)
P.S. re: my current music selection today, you guys wanna know an embarassing thing about me? For the longest time, I thought in this song he was singing "Knights in white satin." Haha. WHOLE different mental image. I kinda understand the song a lot better now.

I get what you're saying, I do. But I hate when I know ANY of the contestants have boyfriends/girlfriends or are married. Randi and Evan were so much less interesting once I knew her hang up was that she was married. Because then I couldn't make up scenarios in my head where she secretly hated him, and that's why she would stand so far from him. No! It was because she's young and married.
I didn't mind so much with Melissa, but that's because she was so much older.
Also, with a lot of them, they were out in the real world, but it just wasn't mentioned on the show. Like Danny and his partner worked together, so it wasn't a secret or anything. Or Adam Lambert on Idol.
Also, it's like when Simon told Kris he shouldn't have mentioned his wife on the show that one time. It's wrong, but you gotta keep the dream alive! Let the audience fill in the blanks! Then again, all of those poor young girls crushing on Travis.
BUT. I do get where you're coming from. I totally do. And I recognize that it's easy for me to talk about keeping the dream alive as a straight chick, so there you go.
ALSO! You should tag your posts so I can go back and read your Bones reactions once I catch up.

Date: 2009-09-21 04:55 pm (UTC)I know what you mean, re: the girlfriend/boyfriend thing. It doesn't matter to me quite as much, but I can definitely understand what you're saying. I kind of shipped Donyelle and Benji after all, not gonna lie. Heh.
I think it'd be nice if they had at least one person who was out on the show itself though, since the straight actors do sometimes talk about their RL relationships, but more so because of the types of comments Nigel has made, re: always being super concerned about men not appearing effeminate, wanting the same-sex pairing last year to dance with girls, etc. It made me wonder if Nigel had put pressure on them NOT to be out, but maybe that's not fair. I think if Nigel hadn't made those types of comments, I would've just assumed the dancers were being vague completely of their own volition, which I'd totally understand.
Anyway, back to the point, I totally understand your perspective and think it's absolutely valid too. :-) I don't think I'd want to suddenly hear ALL about their personal lives either, and do like shipping the dancers sometimes as well.
Also, I'll try to tag my posts for you soon! I've been meaning to do that anyway.
